How to Select Industrial Roller Covering Material: Engineering Guide

Selecting an elastomer, cast polyurethane, or hard functional coating requires simultaneous evaluation of four engineering pillars: mechanical nip stress, chemical solvent exposure, thermal equilibrium, and rotational dynamics.

Four Pillars of Engineering Roller Analysis

Proper roller covering selection can never be reduced to copying Shore hardness from an outdated drawing. Field service experience at PROEXPORT demonstrates that long-term covering durability requires fulfilling four concurrent criteria:

1. Mechanical stress profile: linear nip load (N/mm), radial contact deformation, surface peripheral speed, and exposure to sharp substrate edges or abrasive particulate matter.

2. Chemical environment & cleaning cycle: continuous contact with primary process fluids (adhesives, lacquers, inks, process oils) plus brief yet frequently aggressive contact with washdown solvents and technical detergents.

3. Thermal dynamics & material hysteresis: actual operating surface temperature, accounting for frictional heating and cyclic deformation hysteretic heat build-up.

4. Surface topography requirements: functional hardness (Shore A, Shore D, Vickers HV), roughness profile Ra (from optical super-mirror Ra < 0.08 µm to matte finishes), and functional groove geometry.

Contact with machine oils & greasesNBR Rubber (Nitrile)Non-polar polymer chain prevents swelling in aliphatic hydrocarbons, lubricating oils, and mineral greases.
UV coating / polar solvent inksEPDM Rubber (70–80 ShA)Resistant to UV lacquer acrylic monomers, ketones (MEK, acetone), and esters; total immunity to ozone cracking and UV degradation.
Heavy duty transport / AGV high loadVulkollan® (Covestro 93/95 ShA)Lowest dynamic hysteresis tan delta; eliminates internal heat build-up under wheel/roller loads up to 10,000 kg; DIN abrasion < 30 mm³.
High temp up to +250°C / anti-adhesionTechnical Silicone (50–70 ShA)Superior non-stick release for hot-melt glues and polymer extrusion; thermal stability up to +200°C continuous (+250°C peak).
Film rewinding / smooth guide rollersHard Chrome (850–1200 HV, Ra < 0.08 µm)Low friction coefficient (CoF ~0.15 dry / ~0.03 lubricated); eliminates stick-slip vibration and web wrinkling.
Fluid metering / abrasive slurriesCr₂O₃ Plasma Ceramic (1200–1800 HV)Extreme wear resistance in aqueous and acidic media; complete chemical inertness with zero geometric dimensional change.

Why Shore A Hardness Alone Is Insufficient

Specifying a roller covering solely by Shore A durometer is the single most common cause of premature line failure. Two elastomers sharing identical 70 Shore A hardness behave fundamentally differently in chemical service — NBR in contact with ketones swells by over 30% and softens within 48 hours, whereas EPDM maintains geometric stability.

At PROEXPORT, prior to quotation, we assess actual operating conditions: process fluids, cleaning protocols, continuous rotational speeds, temperature profiles, and mating cylinder kinematics. This ensures every plant receives an engineered covering optimized for maximum mean time between failures (MTBF).
